Re:Hoyt jib boom and bow sprit - 2006/09/24 08:09
Robert -
thanks for your questions. From the get go the idea of this boat is that it can be singlehanded with main and jib. We do not have a boom (actually it is not feasible as we have no place for the front end), but we do have a curved track on the front of the main beam that is over-long for reaching.
As for reefing, we have lazyjacks and slab reefing, but not a single line - the loads are too high and the boom would have to be 2x as heavy. However, our systems is pretty easy: lower main and secure halyard; wind on the cunningham / tack; pass a loop through the clew grommet and shackle. Not quite as easy as the single line, but it allows us much better control of the sail shape, and it is pretty quick.
Our sail has 3 reef points (OK actually North forgot the 3rd in this sail). The first reef is about 1 meter below the mast top, second is just below the hounds so you can still sheet hard, third is a verydeep storm reef - just above the spreaders which are long and quite swept and engineered to support the leech load. We also are intending to reef the jib (again the reef points were not engineered into the sail) - although you will be able to have a rollerfurler if you do not like hanks (I am a fan of simple things). If you ahve been sailing a Val, you know that reefing capabilities on a multi are crucial.
I could not agree with you more about the spinnaker - but also our apparent never comes aft of about 55-60 degrees so all we have are asymetrical gennakers (not full enough to be technically a spinnaker). The primary sail is a 70m2 70% midgirth masthead sail which we have on a roller. We also have 50% midgirth sail that we are evaluating but will likely cut down to a lower hoist as a high wind sail / light wind upwind sail.
All of our deck gear is Harken (except in a handful of applications where the really do not have an appropriate product - so we have the odd Ronstan swivel cam and Karver floating block). Winches on this boat are 32s for the gennacker - we are thinking of 40s just to make things easy. We are also adding a pair of 32 Self tailing utility winches on the main beam.
I hope all this is helpful.
